When the Japanese outdoor-lifestyle brand Snow Peak was designing its new flagship Portland store on Northwest 23rd Avenue, the company knew it wanted a beautiful space with enough elbow room for customers to try out the gear.
From titanium backpacking sporks and portable grills to fireside camp chairs, much of Snow Peak’s core product line focuses on elegantly designed equipment for people to make and enjoy meals together outdoors. It is “the foodiest brand in the outdoor industry, and the outdoorsiest brand in the food industry,” says Matt Liddle, the company’s chief operating officer in the U.S.
WINNIPEG Some residents in Charleswood are concerned about what a proposed 10-storey building development in their neighbourhood could mean for traffic, safety and their green space. For more than 20 years, Monica DuBois and her family have lived on the same side of the street as a green space, separated by a few trees. DuBois said they enjoy the quiet and the wild life, but she is worried that could change if the proposed development gets the go-ahead. “This area right here is what is considered the gateway to Charleswood and it’s very peaceful and very serene and it would completely destroy this beautiful setting that we have here,” she said.
WINNIPEG A pair of Manitoba schools had a special visitor on Wednesday, and it was surely an out-of-this-world experience. Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk paid a virtual visit to students at Christ the King and Edward Schreyer Schools. The two schools won a visit from an astronaut through a contest put on by the Canadian Space Agency’s Junior Astronauts initiative. Kutryk provided students with an overview of his job, and answered questions on training, eating, space and the specialized tools astronauts use. “If you’re in space and you crank that wrench one way, it doesn’t turn the bolt, it turns you,” he explained to students.
